In the spring of 2000, a group
of skiers and boarders got together at a remote place in the northern hemisphere. Equipped with only a few digital cameras
and a computer, a short film clip was made just for the fun of it. Soon after that, one of the guys threw out a wild idea
of producing a longer film that would be freely available over the Internet for everyone around the world.
Unlike conventional movies, Solid
Powder will be released, free of charge, over the Internet. For the past two years the boys from HRNegative Films, the makers
of the movie, have been filming on all the corners of the world. Skiers and boarders have also been able to send in their
own material through the movies website, www.solidpowder.com.
Now, most of the work is done
and the film is about to be released. In addition to its unusual way of distribution, the film also differs in the display
of its content. The 35-minute film will resemble more of a rock video rather than a typical segmented freeride film. We had
to make the film as compact as possible. People dont want to waste time downloading long sections of intros and credits, so
we focused on putting in just a lot more tricks says Lauri Lassila, the co-director of the film.
The film features nearly 100 different
riders from Scandinavia and Australia to North America and Europe, which have also been the main locations for filming.
Its not about making a profit.
We are not going to make any money with it. Its all about the fun of riding and giving everyone an equal opportunity to see
it
